Editorial Policy
1. Governance and Editorial Principles
The editorial policy of the European Journal of Language and Literature Studies (EJLS) follows the principles and standards of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
- Editorial leadership: The journal is led by its Editor-in-Chief and two Co-Editors-in-Chief, with a Managing Editor and an international editorial and advisory board (see Editorial Team). Each manuscript is handled by the Editor-in-Chief or a Co-Editor-in-Chief.
- Accountability and impartiality: The editors are responsible for everything published in EJLS. Manuscripts are judged only on their scholarly merit, originality and relevance, without regard to the authors’ gender, race, ethnic origin, citizenship, institution, religious beliefs or political views.
- Editorial independence: Decisions to accept, revise, reject or retract a manuscript are taken by the editors on the basis of independent peer review. Commercial, institutional and personal interests, including payment of the APC, have no influence on these decisions.
- Confidentiality: Editors and editorial staff do not disclose information about a submission to anyone other than the corresponding author, the reviewers and potential reviewers.
2. Open Access, Copyright and Licensing
- Open access: EJLS is a fully open-access journal. All articles are free to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search and link to immediately on publication, without subscription or pay-per-view fees.
- Licence: Articles are published under the CC BY 4.0 (Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International) license, stated in the article metadata and on the article pages and PDFs. Anyone may share and adapt the work for any purpose, provided the author(s) and the original publication are credited.
- Copyright: Authors keep the copyright of their work and grant the journal the right of first publication. The copyright holder is named on each published article.
- Article processing charge: A charge of £950 covers peer-review management, copyediting, typesetting, DOI registration, hosting and archiving. It is invoiced only after acceptance; there are no submission fees or other hidden charges.
3. Archiving and Self-Archiving
- Digital preservation: Published issues are deposited in the PKP Preservation Network (PKP PN), which keeps them permanently available even if the journal ceases publication.
- Publisher archive: All published issues and articles, with their metadata, are also kept on the publisher’s servers in HTML and PDF form, and each article has a DOI registered with Crossref.
- Self-archiving: Authors may deposit any version of their article (preprint, accepted manuscript or published version) in institutional or subject repositories and on personal websites, with a link to the published article.
4. Peer Review
EJLS uses double-blind peer review: every manuscript that passes the initial assessment is evaluated by at least two independent reviewers who are experts in its field. Reviewers assess originality, scholarly quality, method or argument, engagement with the literature, citation accuracy and language. The editors decide to accept as is, ask for minor or major revisions, or reject. See the Peer Review Process.
5. Publication Ethics and Misconduct
- Similarity checks: Every manuscript is checked for similarity with iThenticate before peer review. Plagiarism, text recycling and redundant publication are not accepted.
- Conflicts of interest: Authors, reviewers and editors declare any financial or non-financial interest that could influence, or appear to influence, the work.
- Duplicate submission: Only manuscripts that have not been published, in whole or in part, and are not under review elsewhere are considered.
- Human participants: Studies with human participants state the ethics approval and confirm informed consent; personal identifying information is removed.
- Misconduct: Allegations of misconduct are investigated following the COPE flowcharts and may lead to retraction or to notifying the authors’ institutions.
See the Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement and the Generative AI Policy.
6. Authorship
- Definition: Authorship is limited to those who made a substantial contribution to the conception, research, analysis or writing of the article, and who approve its final version.
- Accountability: Authors are jointly responsible for the accuracy and integrity of the published work.
- After publication: Published articles cannot be withdrawn; errors are corrected by published corrections. Name changes are made on request in line with COPE guidance.
- Citation integrity: Forced citations, unnecessary self-citations and references not discussed in the text are not accepted.
7. Publication Schedule and Distribution
EJLS publishes three issues a year, on 28 April, 28 August and 28 December:
- 1st Issue (April): submission deadline 28 February
- 2nd Issue (August): submission deadline 28 June
- 3rd Issue (December): submission deadline 28 October
Articles are published online in HTML and as paginated PDF files. A PDF of each complete issue, with its table of contents, is also made available, for example for printing.
8. Advertising and Marketing
- Commercial independence: EJLS does not accept commercial advertising or sponsorship on its website or in its issues.
- Direct marketing: Calls for papers and other messages sent by the journal or the publisher are targeted, truthful and unobtrusive, and are meant only to invite good research.
